Rowan Woodbury

Bio

Rowan Woodbury is an in demand educator and musician working in the Denver area. Originally from Lakewood CO, he moved to Boulder to get his Bachelors of Music Education at the University of Colorado. He studied classical percussion and Jazz drum set, and also worked with the Battalion drum corps and Blue Knights percussion ensemble. After college, he moved to Denver and began work as a freelance educator and performer. His teachers and mentors include Mike Tetreault, Mikey Williams, Jeff Franca, Steve Lyman and Adam Deitch.

Rowan has had the honor of working with some of Colorado's best musicians and bands. Current and past projects include Kayla and the Rays, John Gauer and the Cat's Glasses, People in Between, Questshun, Summer Beadhead, and the Pamlico Sound. As a freelance drummer he has worked with Kayla Smith, Sean Applebee, and the Meadowlark House Band. These projects have a wide range in sound that allow Rowan to explore all genres. From Funk to Jazz to Punk, he is lucky to play it all.

As an educator Rowan has had a large impact on the front range percussion and drum set scene. He served as percussion director for the Chatfield-area schools and still does consulting work with Chatfield High School and Deer Creek Middle School. He also ran a large private lesson studio out of Rupps Drums where he helped tons of students gain confidence and skill on drum set.

His teaching philosophy revolves around adaptability and play. Every student learns differently, so he doesn't use a strict method with every client. Rather he pulls from a variety of method books and songs (stick control and syncopation are his favorites) to craft a curriculum that is differentiated to each student. All his lessons have a heavy emphasis on technique, rhythm literacy (aural and written), and play! He believes learning anything takes time and work, but the work should always feel like play - especially when learning Music.
When he's not teaching or playing music, Rowan enjoys exploring Colorado's gorgeous wilderness, and can usually be found drinking tea on the side of a mountain.

Student Testimonies

"Rowan is worth all the time and money in the world if you are interested in learning drumming! He is deeply committed to helping you master the kit and always finds a way to make every lesson feel personal to you and your style of learning. He is very motivational, uplifting, and just an overall great guy. So long as he keeps offering lessons, I will keep showing up to learn from him!" - Patrick C.

"At almost 1.5 years bringing my son to Rowan for private drum lessons, I'm happy to report that our family is thrilled with the experiences in exchange, the growth and development in our son, and we are grateful to continue participating in his offering!" - Amanda H.

"I went from knowing absolutely nothing about drumming to feeling confident in my skills and ability to grow over the past year and a half that I've been working with Rowan. He always knows how to make lessons fun and interesting, and finds creative ways to take any song or idea I give him and turn it into a skill level-appropriate exercise or concept. He's been able to adapt to my way of thinking and learning, and makes even the lessons where I'm struggling the most into something I can walk away from feeling like it was good, productive experience." - Frankie B.
